The system
A finish is several possible stages, not one
Sold as a system rather than a tin, because the topcoat only performs as well as what is under it. Ask and we will specify the whole build-up for your surface.
- Preparation. Loose material removed, cracks filled, surface cleaned and dry. Poor surface preparation can cause premature coating failure even when a suitable coating is used.
- Primer. Primer and sealer requirements depend on the substrate, the existing coating condition and the selected paint system. Follow the selected manufacturer’s system.
- Putty. Levels the surface where the finish needs to be smooth. Sanded back before the topcoat.
- Topcoat. Applied in the finish and shade chosen, in the number of coats specified for the selected product or system, within the recoat window on the tin.

Tinting availability depends on the selected brand, product, base and tinting system and is confirmed before purchase.
Take a shade card home
Colour reads differently in daylight, in shade, and under artificial light. Look at the card on the actual wall before committing to twenty litres.
Keep the shade code
Where a tinting record or formula reference is provided, keep it. Knowing the code helps identify the original colour for a future purchase. An exact match cannot be guaranteed, because existing coatings, batches, application and ageing change appearance over time.
Confirm before tinting
Custom-tinted products may be treated differently from standard unopened stock under the applicable sales policy. Confirm returnability and tinting availability before ordering, and confirm the shade before we tint.

How much you actually need
Area, not rooms
Wall area in square feet is what determines quantity. Measure length by height for each wall, subtract large openings, and tell us the total.
Surface changes everything
A smooth puttied wall takes far less paint than rough plaster or a porous exterior. Published coverage figures apply under the product manufacturer’s stated test and application conditions. Use the coverage figure and coat count for the specific product being considered.
Buy the topcoat in one batch
Shade varies slightly between manufacturing batches. Buying the whole quantity together avoids a visible join halfway along a wall.
